How to Use a Lawn Chair as a Sweater Drying Rack and Save Space

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

This is a tip avoid buying more stuff that you have to find room for.

Why buy a sweater drying rack when you can get one that doubles as an extra chair?

To top it off, some lawn chairs cost less than sweater drying racks.

Step 1   Wash your sweater out in the sink using a mild detergent. Don’t agitate too much. Wring it in a towel to get most of the moisture out.
Step 2   Get a lawn chair.  The best ones are the ones with a cloth seat and a collapsing metal frame. Don’t use a formed plastic ones if the plastic has started to rot. If you have one with the tubular aluminum frame, you want to avoid the sweater touching the metal parts, especially anything rusty.
Step 3   Put the chair on a water resistant surface like tile, linoleum, or an outside deck.
Step 4   Put the sweater on the chair and orient it toward the sun or heat.

Outdoor Fire Pit Saftey

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Any time you’re dealing with an open flame you should always be responsible and take the necessary precautions to avoid any accidents. An open fire is a beautiful, warming accent to any yard or garden setting. It is inviting and invigorating as a central point of congregation and socialization. Make sure it is also safe so that you are free to enjoy it without the worry of an unforeseen accident.

Wood burning fire pits give the most authentic outdoor fire experience. The smell of the smoke, the crackling of the logs and the glowing embers combine to create an atmosphere that is magical, one that makes you feel like you’re deep in the woods though you’re only in your backyard. That being said, a wood burning fire also requires the most attention. Be sure to clear away brush and dead or dry vegetation in a 10’-20’ circle around your fire treatment and don’t place your fire pit under low hanging trees where errant sparks and heat might ignite dry foliage and branches. Always use a spark screen, especially with wet or sappy wood, to that sparks cannot escape the fire. Keep a fire extinguisher or garden hose with a spray nozzle nearby so that if anything does escape the fire area you can smother it quickly and effectively. Finally, be sure to protect yourself. Use a poker or log grabber to move and arrange logs and never try to move a fire treatment that isn’t cold. Another way to protect yourself and your investments is to not use lighter fluids to start your fires. They can be unpredictable and dangerous; instead, use kindling and build your fire up slowly so that it is always under control and manageable.

Liquid Propane (LP) and natural gas (NG) fire treatments require less attention and tending and are more convenient and easy to light, but that doesn’t mean that you should be any less diligent and cautious. Every time you intend to use your LP or NG fire treatment you should check all the hoses, valves and attachment to make sure there are no leaks or holes before you introduce any kind of flame or spark for ignition. If your fire treatment runs on a pilot-light be sure to check it from time to time to make sure it hasn’t been blown out and that combustible gases aren’t filling your fire area. Always know how and where to shut of your LP or NG supply in case of an emergency.

Fire treatments are lovely additions to any outdoor décor. With a little care and forethought they can be safe, almost worry free additions that will bring you warmth and joy for years to come. Protect yourself, your family and your home by using safe fire tending practices and a little common sense.

Build a Shade Arbor

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Looking for an attractive outdoor project that won’t take all summer to build? The shade arbor shown on these pages is a worthy example, even though this particular project actually took nearly three weekends to build. That’s because we chose to paint it before screwing it together so we could cover all the surfaces and avoid having to work on a ladder 8 ft. off the ground.

We spent the first weekend cutting the lumber to length and applying two coats of primer to all surfaces. The next weekend, we dug and poured concrete footings and applied two topcoats of paint to the parts. Then we took one more day to build the arbor and paint the posts, which arrived the day before construction began.

The arbor was built entirely of construction-grade redwood, which resists rot and insects. Although cedar and pressure-treated pine are also rot- and insect-resistant, redwood is friendlier to work with. It’s lightweight, soft and very easy to cut and shape. It’s also less likely than pressure-treated pine to warp or twist, and it holds paint beautifully.

The total cost for the redwood was about $1,500. Western red cedar costs about the same. If you’re willing to sacrifice some dimensional stability, use pressure-treated pine, which runs significantly less—just about $600 to $700.

1. Dig footing holes

Dig each footing hole about 18-inches-wide and 24-inches-deep, or to the frost line, whichever depth is greater. Fill each hole with concrete, then insert a 42-inch-long piece of ½-inch-diameter galvanized-metal pipe. (The pipe has an outside diameter of 1 ½ inches) Leave 18-inches of pipe sticking up from the middle of the footing. Allow the concrete to cure at least 24 hours. Next, use a long, 1 ½-inch-diameter auger bit or spade bit to bore a center hole into the bottom end of a post.

2. Treat and lift the posts

Treat the end of the post with wood preservative. Then lift up the post and have a helper align the center hole with the pipe. Slowly lower the post over the pipe until it sits on the concrete footing. Do the same for the remaining five posts. Check to be sure that each post is perfectly plumb; if necessary, drive a cedar-shingle shim underneath to align it.

3. Assemble beams

Assemble the three pairs of double 2×8 beams before lifting them onto the top of the posts. For each pair, cut two 7½-inch-square pieces of ½-inch-thick pressure-treated plywood. Screw the plywood plates to the bottom edge of two 2x8s with galvanized decking screws. Carefully position the plywood plates so they align with the posts.

4. Raise and secure the beam

Raise the assembled beam with a helper and place it on top of the posts. To secure the beam, drive screws down through the plywood plates and into the tops of the posts.

5. Lay the rafters

Lay the 17½-foot-long rafters across the 2×8 beams, spacing them 20-inches on center. Attach each rafter with 3½-inch decking screws driven down at an angle into the 2x8s. Place screws alternately on one side of the rafter and then the other to hold each one straight up on edge.

6. Lay the lattice strips

Next, lay the nine 1×2 lattice strips across the 2×6 rafters; space them 21½-inches on center. Use a tape measure to ensure that each 10½-foot-long lattice strip overhangs the first rafter by 2-inches.

7. Fasten the lattice

Fasten the lattice strips to the rafters with 2½-inch decking screws.

8. Hide the fastening plates

After finishing the overhead canopy, install 1×3 trim around the top of each post to hide the plywood fastening plates. Attach the trim with galvanized finishing nails.

9. Finish the post corners

Use a router fitted with a ½-inch chamfering bit to shape all four corners of each post. Make two or three progressively deeper cuts so you don’t splinter the wood or overload the tool. Start the chamfers 3-inches below the 1×3 trim and end them 20-inches above the bottom of the posts. Sand the chamfers smooth with a random-orbit sander, then prime and paint them to match the rest of the structure.

Outdoor Water Fountains – Add Peace and Tranquility to Your Surroundings

Monday, February 9th, 2009

An outdoor water fountain is a great complement to your garden or other outdoor space. Not only are water fountains elegant, they also have a soothing aura about them that is very relaxing. Depending on how much space you have, and your budget, you can find the one that is ideal for your needs from among the hundreds of types, sizes and materials available. Your outdoor water fountain can be wall mounted, freestanding, tabletop, floor fountains or the traditional statuary type. You will find a wide choice of materials ranging from metal, stone, concrete, terracotta, slate, etc. Let us take a look at how you should care for your outdoor fountain during winter.

Winter Care For Outdoor Water Fountains

After enjoying your outdoor garden water fountain through summer and spring, it is time to take care of it when fall arrives with winter not far behind. Winter brings extreme cold temperatures and while your outdoor fountain might be sturdy enough to withstand the weather, you cannot allow the water to freeze in it since this could result in damaging the fountain and its pump. Portable outdoor fountains can simply be carried indoors or even stored in the garage until winter is over. But if you have a large outdoor water fountain, then there are several things you need to do to ensure that it is up and running after winter.

If your fountain can be moved, ideally is should be stored in your garage. It is often possible to dismantle tiered fountains, making them easier to store. Large fountains and fountains made of cast stone pose a problem with portability. Hence just before the temperature becomes sub zero, make sure that you drain the water out of the fountain. The pump must also be preferably removed and stored indoors through winter. This is a good time to clean out the pump to remove any build up of dirt and algae. A fountain cover would be a good investment now, so that you can keep the fountain from accumulating moisture. Covers are usually water proof material with a drawstring that help you fix it really tight, preventing it from blowing away in a breeze. These covers are available in different sizes to suit different outdoor fountain.

Outdoor fountains often come with nightlights that highlight the fountain after the sun has set. Illuminated fountains are available with their own LED lights. If not you can easily buy your own. Spotlights are also in vogue so that if you have an outdoor garden party, your fountain can provide the lighting you need. In summer, you can also relax in your garden during the cool evenings, enjoying the sight of your outdoor fountain and the water cascading down.

Nowadays there are trendy outdoor fountains that do not have a conventional shape. They are designed with abstract ideas and unusual materials. A majority of them are made of lightweight material, enabling you to move the fountain when necessary. Earlier outdoor fountains were common only in public places but today, they have become quite popular, especially the outdoor wall water fountains, at business houses and large homes.

Outdoor Clocks

Monday, February 9th, 2009

If you are into outdoor landscaping and gardening, you obviously spend a considerable amount of time outdoors. And as the weather turns from the cold and rainy days of winter to warm spring days, visions of crocuses, tulips and outdoor barbeques take over. But spending so much time outside, especially doing the things you love, can certainly make you lose track of the time. So, why not add an outdoor clock to your patio area for everyone to enjoy?

Outdoor clocks add a nice touch to any garden or outdoor entertainment area. They also give gardeners a way of keeping track of the time as they work on their lawn and gardens. Better yet, they can add a decorative touch to your entertainment areas as well. And as you know, these areas can be difficult to decorate, especially in locations with varying weather and climates.

Will Weather Be An Issue?

Despite your climate, it is always best to use outdoor clocks that are waterproof and weatherproof. These clocks are usually sealed with weatherproofing sealant and gaskets to ensure that the rain and dust stay out of the clock’s mechanisms. Most outdoor clocks will be clearly labeled as such, but it pays to double check the packaging just to make sure.

Even though most outdoor clocks are manufactured to be weatherproof, you can protect them further by selecting a location for them that is sheltered from the elements. The best location for an outside wall clock is higher on the wall where it can benefit from the protection of the overhang (eaves) of your roof.

If you live in the Northern climates, the ultimate protection during the winter months is to take your clock down and store it in a warm, dry location. Before putting your clock in storage, perform any required maintenance per the operating manual and you can be ensured of enjoying your clock through many seasons.

Outdoor Clock Features

Can outdoor clocks do more than just provide the time? Of course they can. The more elaborate outside clocks have a host of features that add to the functionality and usefulness of the clock. Some come with a thermometer and barometer to monitor the weather. Add a rain gauge and you will have a bona fide weather station at your disposal.

A very nice feature that is offered with some of the higher-end models is a wireless display. This allows your outside clock to transmit data to a second display unit inside your home. Imagine being able to have the time, temperature, and barometric pressure at your fingertips whether you are on the patio or inside the house.

And don’t forget, outdoor clocks also make the perfect gift for your friends and family members who enjoy your passion for outdoor living. They especially make a terrific housewarming gift for friends that have just become new homeowners.

So, whether you are looking to decorate your porch, patio, gazebo, or other outside living area, an outdoor clock can be the perfect choice.

Selecting The Best Outdoor Patio Furnature

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Are you planning to furnish your outdoors? Have you been wondering about the best furniture for your patio? This article will help you create a great ambiance for your outdoors and give you the tips on easy maintenance.

Before you move towards the furniture store to buy patio furniture, have a good look at your patio. Is it very large? Does it have a well-defined garden? Is there a swimming pool? Will you need dining furniture to serve food outside? These questions will help you decide about the type of furniture to be bought. Also, you should consider the all year round weather of the place you live in. Heavy rains, perpetual sunshine or heavy snowing will require specific furniture. Try to look into different furniture stores to be able to get a good picture of the possible costs of different furniture. Buying wholesale Amish furniture can reduce costs considerably while providing excellent selections from the world-renowned furniture collection. Finally, make sure you have a budget in mind.

For the outdoor furniture, it is the material that is most important. If you are considering traditional furniture, consider buying furniture made of wood. Wooden furniture looks good but needs a lot of maintenance. The best type of wooden furniture for outdoors would be Oak furniture. Oak can be quite durable and come in various varieties like Chinese Oak and Red Oak. Amish oak furniture is highly in demand for its beauty and durability.

Cedar is another good choice for wooden furniture. This wood is softer than Oak but looks particularly warm and inviting. Moreover, it is much lighter than Oak and thus it is easier to transfer this furniture from one place to the other in times of need. A popular form of cedar is Red Cedar. Both Oak and cedar are durable and have materials that keep fungus, insects and mildew away.

Another option for beautiful wooden furniture that lasts is teak. It is a perennial favorite with buyers because of its lovely coloring and hardwood qualities. Teak is also capable of holding its own against all weather conditions and its natural oils act as natural deterrents to mosses. No re-polishing or painting is necessary for teak as it lasts long without excessive finishing.

Enjoying the beauty of nature and the wonderful weather in your patio can be very rejuvenating. However, without good and durable furniture, a lot of the fun from the outdoors is gone. Apart from selecting the right type of furniture for your courtyard, you must consider the maintenance requirements of the furniture. Most wooden furniture requires frequent retouches and cleaning. Wooden furniture that is of poor quality could also lose most of its sheen and beauty very soon.

Many people opt for plastic or steel furniture. Plastic furniture works particularly well if you have a swimming pool in the courtyard. If you carry out barbecue and other heavy cooking in your patio, try using steel or wrought iron furniture as the heat might affect the plastic furniture. You can even buy folding dining tables and chairs that are easy to shift for outdoor parties.

Therefore, choosing the best outdoor furniture requires scrutinizing of both style and the material used for the furniture. Check out the huge range of lovely furniture in the market and enjoy the warm sunshine outside!
