Vacation Made Simple

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Envision a hammock shaded between two beautiful oak trees. You rest peacefully while the cool winds sway you slightly. You listen to your children nearby playing Marco Polo in the crystal blue water of your pool. Your spouse is not far away grilling a delicious lunch while blending a frothy summertime drink for you on the countertop of your outdoor kitchen.

More and more people are living versions of this fantasy by creating the outdoor room of their dreams complete with hot tubs, fire pits, weatherproof rugs, day beds, waterfalls and televisions. Depending on budget, yard size and aspirations, families can find a relaxing getaway right outside their patio door.

Countless creative options exist for your outdoor haven. Decks, porches and patios can give your home a “come on and pull up a chair” feel. Covered outdoor living areas such as gazebos, cabanas, pavilions, sunrooms and screened-in porches are popular as well. Entertaining doesn’t rely so much on good weather if you can keep out bugs, rain or relentless sunrays with covered shelter. Here are some ideas to get you going.
Watering Hole

Putting in a pool, spa or both can make any yard a vacation destination. And pools have come a long way from earlier versions that required a ton of TLC. Jamie Georgelos, pool manager at Alpin Haus in Amsterdam and Clifton Park, says pools have become much more energy efficient and easier to clean. Variable speed pumps, for instance, work just like a furnace thermostat. If you are at work and no one is using the pool, the pump works at a minimal level.

A radiant pool with a 2.5 inch polystyrene layer in the center of the pool’s three layers traps heat and reduces the cost of heating the water. “It extends your season at a lower cost. We have customers raving about these pools. They are blown away by the energy efficiency of them,” Georgelos says.

Alpin Haus also carries the CalderaSpas line, which has been completely revamped for a more spa visit look and feel. The controls, for instance, look like rocks. The spa floors reflect a pebble finish. It’s all about comfort and style, Georgelos says. The spas also focus on saving energy and heat while using fewer chemicals. Automatic mineral cartridges put the sanitizing chemicals in when needed.

Waterfalls, along with high tech televisions swiveling from the side of the spa, wireless remotes to operate the spa from anywhere in your backyard, iPod speaker hookups and LED lights are just a few of the many conveniences. “Even though things aren’t great financially out there, some people are getting a better sense that things are on the right path. They’ve put it off long enough and are going to purchase their pool or spa now and get the backyard they’ve always wanted,” he says.

Convertible Comfort

If lounging is your game, Nikita Indoor Outdoor Convertibles (www.justleanback.com) furnishes homeowners with the perfect solution: outdoor furniture so versatile that it converts into beds. On those warm summer nights, everyone can sleep outside under the moon without hauling any bulky tents or cots from the garage.

Nikita Grigoriev, an engineer by trade, designed and patented the furniture to counterbalance the sitter’s weight. As you sit and lean back, the chair moves with you, allowing you to pick the angle you prefer. Buyers can choose from a chair, loveseat or couch, or a king-size lounger. Each comes with thick mattresses of memory foam for peaceful resting. They also are on wheels for easy moving from indoor to outdoor or vice versa, and all are created with stainless steel hardware to avoid any rusting. The furniture is made per order.

“We’re getting customers that have new homes, vacation homes or are very eco-conscious,” he says. “The design really fits their needs. It’s functional, moveable and attractive.” The company’s showrooms, in Saratoga Springs and Oneonta, also have ottomans, end tables and coffee tables, all of which have offer dual functions, too.

Eating and Cooking Al Fresco

Customers of Dil Sheji want everything they have indoors — from fireplace to elaborate kitchen with built-in pizza ovens — available in their backyards as well. “People are gung ho about their outdoor kitchens. I have one with the sink, burner and grill. You pretty much can have what you want. If you don’t have an unlimited budget, then you can always add something year after year,” Sheji says.

An outdoor pizza and baking oven is a fairly new addition to the backyard kitchen, he adds. Sheji goes to outdoor shows and events across the New York area with a 400-pound pizza oven in the back of his truck. “I educate the homeowner that this is a possibility, too. Talk about entertaining when you can have an outdoor pizza party with everyone bringing toppings and making their own pizza. It’s a hit,” he says.

These ovens can cook everything from burgers to bread. Sheji also builds stone pool decks, patios, fireplaces and just about anything someone wants to design and use. “This is a lot easier to just walk into your backyard instead of spending a lot of money going on vacation.”

If someone is building an outdoor kitchen, he needs the right appliances. Earl B. Feiden Inc. in Latham and Kingston sells an extensive line of grills, grill heads, stainless steel cabinetry, refrigerators, ice makers and cocktail pros (sinks with glass holders, side burners and more). “Sure, outdoor kitchens are a luxury item. But we’ve been a huge advocate of outdoor cooking, and we’re seeing more people want to make that leap and make their backyards a place to hang out,” says Dan Oliver, a spokesman at Feiden’s. The store also has begun selling stone pizza ovens that can be incorporated into an outdoor kitchen design or stand by themselves.

Oliver works with homeowners, masons, pool retailers, plumbers and outdoor landscapers to make sure the right size of appliances are ordered and delivered. “Outdoor living can be anything you want it to be. People are thinking out of the box and bringing the same conveniences from their indoor kitchens to the outside,” he says.

When a homeowner adds colorful flowers, trees and bushes, plus outdoor lighting, the backyard retreat is complete. Add in a croquet set, volleyball net and other outdoor games to keep people active and happy, and the only thing you have to worry about is bringing the sunscreen.

Backyard Mosquito Control Methods

Backyard Mosquito Control Method #1: Removing Their Habitat

One common method of backyard mosquito control is removing places where mosquitoes live and breed. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, and they need very little water to thrive. Don’t overlook where small amounts of water can collect, such as potted plant trays, pet water bowls, flowerpots, tree holes, plastic covers, and toys. Other common mosquito breeding grounds include puddles, rain gutters, old tires, ponds, irrigation ditches, catch basins, birdbaths, fountains, and wading pools.

To discourage breeding, empty areas of standing water shortly after it rains. For those items that require water, such as birdbaths and wading pools, be sure to change water often, at least once a week. Swimming pools should be kept treated and circulating.

The major drawback of this form of backyard mosquito control is the effort required. Ensuring there is no standing water in your backyard can be difficult. Moreover, some standing water cannot be eliminated, such as nearby ponds and irrigation ditches. Even if you are diligent in this form of backyard mosquito control, your neighbors may not be, which means you’ll still have a mosquito problem. Backyard mosquito control by removing standing water alone is not highly effective. (Methods of Mosquito Control)

Backyard Mosquito Control Method #2: Limiting Your Exposure

This method of backyard mosquito control is based on keeping mosquitoes out of your house and properly covering yourself so you reduce the amount of bites you receive. When outside, wear long pants, shirts with long sleeves, and head nets. Stay inside when mosquitoes are most active, at dawn and dusk, and especially when there is a mosquito-borne disease warning in effect. Make sure your entire home is secure with “bug tight” door screens and windows. Yellow lights tend to attract mosquitoes less than ordinary lights, so replace outdoor lights with yellow “bug” lights.

Limiting your exposure is not a favorite form of backyard mosquito control because it restricts your time outdoors. Often, the best time to enjoy the outdoors is when mosquito activity is at its highest. (Methods of Mosquito Control)

Backyard Mosquito Control Method #3: Using Chemical Repellents

Applying a chemical repellent is another common method of backyard mosquito control. Chemical repellents come in a variety of products, including creams, sprays, liquids, and sticks. For the short-term, this can be an effective form of backyard mosquito control.

Since these products contain chemicals, precaution must be taken when using them. Follow the directions carefully. This is a common drawback of using chemical repellents as backyard mosquito control. Many people don’t want to use chemicals, especially on their children. And while this is an effective short-term backyard mosquito control solution, it does not actually affect the mosquito population. The mosquitoes are still there, perhaps just less interested in biting you, until the chemicals wear off.

Backyard Mosquito Control Method #4: Bug Zappers and Ultrasonic Devices

The electrocuting bug zapper is an ineffective form a backyard mosquito control because it kills only a small amount of mosquitoes. Only 1% of all insects killed by a bug zapper are actually mosquitoes. Ultrasonic devices are also ineffective forms of backyard mosquito control because they simply don’t work.

Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide, heat and moisture, not sound or light. Effective backyard mosquito control must focus on what lures mosquitoes. Otherwise, it simply will not attract enough to affect the mosquito population. (Products and Promotions That Have Limited Value for Mosquito Control)

Don’t despair… there is an effective and long-term backyard mosquito control solution: the propane mosquito trap!

Backyard Mosquito Control Method #5: Effective Mosquito Traps Are the Answer To Your Problems

Mosquito traps are technology’s answer to backyard mosquito control needs. By releasing a precise and steady stream of carbon dioxide, heat, and moisture, mosquito traps effectively mimic human prey. When mosquitoes arrive at the trap, Counterflow™ Technology vacuums them into a net, where they dehydrate and die. By running propane mosquito traps 24/7, the breeding cycle is interrupted and the population is dramatically reduced. By using a mosquito’s own biology against them, properly placed traps provide season-long backyard mosquito control.

Boost Your Backyard Mosquito Control

By adding an attractant to your mosquito trap, you can improve this effective form of backyard mosquito control by up to ten times. Specifically formulated based on your location, attractants effectively lure a wide variety of mosquitoes (including Salt Marsh Mosquitoes and Asian Tiger Mosquitoes), biting midges, black flies and no-see-ums.

Since different biting insects reside in different regions across the country, there are two types of attractants available. Use Octenol if you live in the northern part of the U.S. or on the coast and use Lurex3 if you live in the southern regions or in Hawaii. Mosquitoes are known carriers of many diseases, such as Encephalitis, West Nile Virus, and Heartworm, making effective backyard mosquito control crucial in today’s world. By using a mosquito trap and adding an attractant, you’ll have long-term backyard mosquito control.

Backyard Paradise Vacation

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

There’s no place like home to enjoy a relaxing retreat from a hectic world. Create inviting outdoor spaces in your own backyard and escape every day for a summer filled with peaceful, easy living.

Make your home more inviting during the summer months by creating an outdoor living space. You don’t need to invest in fancy furniture or an expensive landscaping plan. Start with a few simple pieces, strategically placed, and build from there. If you’re planning to vacation at home this summer rather than travel, adding extra living space outside will make being home feel like vacation every day.

Before you start, think about whether you want your space to have a theme or look. It’s tempting to imagine something completely different from your interior scheme: English country garden, Southwest, Mediterranean or Asian. But keep in mind that if you carry the same theme and style from indoors to outdoors, whether it is clean and sleek or shabby chic, your outdoor space will seem more like an extension of the inside.

Start with a central focal point. It can be a grouping of strategically placed furniture arranged to draw the eye and the crowd or something that occurs naturally in the landscape, such as a pond or perennial garden. Depending on the size of your space, you may need only one focal point, but if your area is large, several are appropriate.

The most visually pleasing way to arrange your focal point(s) is by clustering items in small groups, mimicking the random way elements occur in nature. Don’t spread items out too evenly or in geographic shapes. Use the same basic principles as indoor decorating. Instead of pushing all the furniture against the wall of your house, create groupings where guests can face each other. This will make family and friends want to linger longer.

Another effective treatment is to create a contrast between a naturally occurring element (such as a tree) and a purchased piece (such as a swing or hammock). Birdbaths, trellises and arbors are excellent additions. Decorative propane heaters can extend the life of your backyard a few months in the spring and fall. You could place a patio umbrella near a bench for shade, anchoring it with a weighted stand, then transfer the umbrella to your table if you
need shade while dining. To add dimension and interest, consider painting an old bookcase with weatherproof paint and filling it with interesting pottery and plants.

Some of the most popular outdoor accessories offered by Hy-Vee are swings, says product specialist Isaac Wiese. Hy-Vee offers two and three-seat swings in a variety of styles, perfect to create a shady spot. Color trends this year focus on burnt reds, cool blues and warm earth tones.

Hy-Vee also offers benches that can be grouped with potted plants or water features. Eucalyptus is a popular wood for outdoor furniture, Wiese says, because of its durability. When choosing wooden furniture that can withstand the elements, look for a dense wood that is high in oil, he advises.

If you don’t have a patio or deck, you can use paving stones to create a “floor” for your living space. The flooring doesn’t necessarily need to be nestled up next to the house; you can create the space out in the middle of your yard, perhaps under a shade tree or in a hidden corner. Lay stones diagonally to make the space seem larger, then add a weatherproof rug for color and focus. Tie it to your landscape by using similar stonework along flower borders or around trees.

Other popular elements are arbors, which create a natural entrance or exit to your space. And a privacy fence offers triple advantages: it creates sight and sound barriers, acts as a natural end to your lot and serves as a backdrop for blooming plants and decorative touches.

Rome wasn’t built in a day. Your outdoor living space doesn’t need to be finished today, this weekend or even this year. Set realistic goals and take it one step at a time. And remember to stop and smell the roses. After all, you’re creating a space to enjoy.

Reasons to transform your backyard into a resort

Monday, April 25th, 2011

Why spend all that money to go away on a family vacation when you can create your own backyard paradise? It is no secret that many people are finding ways to spend less money, and most likely you are doing the same. As the cost of living goes up, the cost of fun can be frustrating, but you can still have an enjoyable summer vacation time. All you need to do is consider how to turn your backyard into a resort with a spa, hot tub, and all the needed accouterments.

A Spa, A Hot Tub Gazebo, and a Barbecue for the Perfect Outdoor Room

Have you ever heard of the term “outdoor room?” These fantastic outdoor environments often include a hot tub or portable spa for relaxation, a gazebo for shelter from the sun or rain, a barbecue or fire pit, seating, and maybe even a bar area. These outdoor rooms include everything you need to create your own staycation. Here are three reasons to have a Clearwater Spas hot tub installed so you can get started creating your resort right out your back door.

1. Save Money, Keep the Fun
You can save money. There is one thing for certain. Vacations are getting more and more expensive. As prices on gasoline go up and it costs more and more to pay for food, theme parks and other vacation idea, you could find yourselves spending a month’s pay just for a week of fun.

When you invest in an outdoor room, you will only have a onetime cost, but you can enjoy your vacation week after week. There will be no traveling. All you have to do is walk outside.

2. Family Bonding Through a Relaxed Staycation
You can spend time with your family. Too often, we get caught up with the hectic world of everyday life that we do not even sit down at meals with the family. Often, vacations are so packed with activity that it is still hard to spend genuine quality time with the family.
When you choose to install a portable hot tub along with other items for your backyard resort, then you can spend true quality time with your family. Relax around the barbecue or in the spa and enjoy a true vacation from life’s stresses with your loved ones.

3. A Portable Spa has Health Benefits Too
You can also find a great deal of health benefit from a hot tub from Clearwater Spas. Because of the combination of warm water and air sent through the jets of the spa, there is a great benefit of hydrotherapy from it. Whether you just need to get away from the stress of work or you need the therapeutic effect on problems of muscle strain or arthritis, you can find it in your backyard.
You will not have to spend hundreds of dollars visiting a rehab facility when you can enjoy hydrotherapy in your own backyard.

There are many reasons to consider creating your own backyard retreat. You can spend time with your family, you can save money, and you can enjoy health benefits. When you have a hot tub installed, and you consider turning your backyard into an outdoor room, you can have a staycation anytime you want.

Vacation Retreats in Your Own Backyard

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Forgo that summer vacation in favor of a retreat you can use right in your own backyard. Decks, patios, landscaping and gardens, and swimming pools and hot tubs can provide a daily relaxing escape from your everyday routines for years to come.

1. Decks: Outdoor Living

Decks have become an extremely popular, low-cost way to add living space to a home. They not only make it convenient to enjoy sitting outside day or night, they also open up the home and facilitate entertaining and outdoor dining.

Outdoor rooms are becoming very popular, in fact, and not just in warm weather climates. Homeowners are remodeling their decks and patios into small- and full-scale outdoor kitchens, dining and entertaining areas.

Even with a small budget you can create an enjoyable outdoor room for dining and entertaining. There are three basics to any outdoor kitchen: grilling area, food prep area and sink and, of course, dining area. Unless you have an extravagant budget to work with, the grill is a good basis for most outdoor kitchens.

But, before you can even begin cooking you will want to have a food preparation area. For many homeowners, a simple counter space will suffice for this. Another basic necessity for food preparation is an outdoor sink.

Perhaps the most important aspect of your outdoor kitchen is the dining area. Be sure to choose a location on your deck that is comfortable. If you’re eating during the daytime you’re not going to want the sun beating down on you or your food. A tabletop umbrella, a pergola, or even large trees will do the trick.

2. Patios: Low-Maintenance Retreat

If you don’t enjoy working on your landscaping and yard work, a small, low-maintenance patio is a good solution for you.

Small doesn’t have to mean dull and uninteresting. A well-designed patio, no matter how small, can be a fun escape from indoors. Use this link to install a patio.

The choice of materials for your patio is based on personal taste. Many people like the classic look of brick, which is durable, easy to install and available in many colors. Patio pavers are also inexpensive and easy to install. They are available in many shapes and sizes and are long lasting and durable. A third option is flagstone. Available in many shapes and colors, flagstone can be pre-cut for standard sizes or custom shapes.

If you would like to have box gardens or a small patch of grass on your patio, plan to have them in the areas that receive consistent amounts of sunlight.

A fountain or small waterfall will add a luxurious and exotic feel to your patio. Running water helps obscure outside noises and creates a relaxing atmosphere, especially if you are in an urban area.

There is nothing as pleasant as enjoying a meal on your patio. Design an area large enough for a table and a few chairs. If you are very limited on space, built-in planters with wide borders offer a place to sit for buffets and casual gatherings.

3. Landscape: Your Personal Garden Escape

There are numerous traditional landscaping and garden styles which you can model your own after. Or, you can be creative and incorporate elements from different styles to create a look of your own design. One of the most important things in landscape design, however, is to work with what you have.

English Garden Style: Utilizes many shrubs and perennials in a design that complements the architectural style of your home. Other decorative elements might include an arbor or bird bath.

Oriental Landscape: Uses water, rocks and evergreens with a variety of plants to create distinctive perspectives. Also popular is the traditional Japanese Zen garden.

Woodland Landscape: Reflects the natural way that fauna grows in a wooded area, this design has a less manicured appearance. A good choice if you do not wish to spend a lot of time on maintenance.

Butterfly Gardens: Butterfly or bird species common to your area make a welcome addition to many gardens. Certain species of plants provide a food source and are useful for attracting these flying friends.

Xeriscape Gardens: Includes lots of low-water plants and flowers, as well as design ideas to reduce water evaporation.

Remember, you will spend a lot more time in your yard if you have a landscape design that you are happy with.

4. Swimming Pools and Hot Tubs: Soak Away Stress

Why should you only enjoy a swimming pool or hot tub while you’re on vacation? If you install your own, every day can be a vacation. A swimming pool can provide hours of relaxation and fun.

Swimming pools come in a variety of different materials, some requiring more maintenance than others. No matter which type fits your liking, use this link to get your own swimming pool.

The slick surface of fiberglass pools repels algae, but it will need occasional re-coating.
Concrete pools can take more wear and tear than other pool materials, however they need to be replaced or resurfaced every 7 to 10 years.
Tile is a concrete pool with a tile finish instead of a plaster finish. The tile surface requires less surface maintenance than other surfaces.
Vinyl-lined pools have a slick surface that, like fiberglass, repels algae. It’s easier to maintain the chemical balance in vinyl pools, but they need to be replaced about every 10 years.

Hot tubs also serve as the ultimate personal retreat. The tub’s therapeutic waters are ideal for stress relief and relaxation, alleviating the aches and pains of everyday demands in the privacy of your own home. Hot Tubs are direct paths to relaxing evenings.

A year-long backyard vacation

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

When the weather is warm, Americans flock to the water. Community pools are overflowing with children playing games, adults swim laps at the local high school pool and vacationing families excitedly splash in hotel pools and relax in nearby hot tubs. But moments at the pool are fleeting unless you know the secret to a year-long backyard vacation.

While purchasing a swimming pool or hot tub is an investment, it can be a very smart one. Upgrading your home with an area for swimming and relaxation enhances your living space, enriches family life and can cut the costs and hassle of joining a health club, buying endless pool passes and even going on vacation. Depending on where you live, you can enjoy your pool year round. Even in colder climates, you can expect four months of pool use each year. When was the last time you could afford to take your family on a four-month trip?

The benefits of having your own swimming pool include:

* Increased outdoor living space

* A fun and desirable space for friends, family and neighbors to socialize and a sure-fire way to create memories for kids

* A cool, refreshing respite on hot days

* Instant access to one of the best low-impact, high-calorie-burning exercises around — swimming

* Added value at resale, particularly in hot climates

If you don’t have room for a pool or if it’s out of your price range, consider a hot tub. There are many brands and models of hot tubs and spas with popular options available in economical price ranges. No matter where you live, you can enjoy a hot tub all year round.

The benefits of having your own hot tub include:

* A customized centerpiece in your own backyard

* A great and relaxing space for romance, family fun and parties

* On-site warm water hydrotherapy with health benefits that include lower blood pressure, relief from joint pain and muscle soreness and better sleep

When you’re looking for a simple, but luxurious way to add value to your home, expand your outdoor living space with a pool or hot tub. Not only will your family’s health improve with daily swimming in the pool and relaxation in the hot tub, but you’ll be creating happy memories for years to come. And that’s an investment worth every penny.

A Gazebo can Create a Backyard Paradise

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

If you want to build a gazebo in your backyard, there are loads of gazebo plans available that will show you how to build a traditional design. A gazebo is not an overly large structure but it can accommodate a nice patio set to allow protection from bugs during a family dinner. The visual appearance of a gazebo can be quite often why people want them in their backyard.

Even though gazebos are not particularly large in size, a traditional gazebo design is a fairly complicated woodworking project. Prior woodworking skills would be helpful before taking on this project. But if you get yourself some comprehensive but simple wood building plans, you should be able to build a traditional gazebo within a few weekends.

Gazebos have dated back hundreds of years and were usually found in England. Many gazebos were elevated to allow a person to sit and gaze out at the surroundings, hence where the name gazebo came from.

The traditional gazebo was usually built out of wood, although sometimes people used stone or even bricks for the walls. Today cedar wood is a popular choice. The gazebo roof is a steep pitch and looks best with cedar shingles. Some gazebos may have had even a thatched roof.

One of the features of any gazebo is that air is allowed to circulate. Even if there are solid walls you will still have at least one door opening & can have windows. Traditional gazebos have been square as well as hexagon shaped, but more often then not they were octagonal.

Modern gazebo plans frequently follow the original gazebo tradition, although nowadays you can also get simple woodworking projects that will show you how to build a gazebo in the simplest possible way. A typical design will have waist-high walls around most of the structure, with an opening for people to walk in and out of. The roof is usually solid and typically high pitched, and it may be tiled, thatched or even simply covered with wooden boards. Sometimes a person may use sheet roofing to finish the roof and keep the elements out.

Lattice work is often included in traditional gazebo designs, and so it is useful if you know how to build a trellis. Different gazebo designs may have wood decking for a floor, or can have outdoor carpet. Some designs will not require a floor, so they can just be on gravel or some other sort of material.

It is best to get some detailed woodworking plans for this project, as a gazebo may not be the easiest thing to build. Alternatively you might consider buying a gazebo kit and assembling it according to the woodworking project plans that are included with the kit.

A good set of gazebo plans will be very helpful. This will usually include cutting and drilling the wooden elements and then assembling them in a specific way. How to sites may provide ideas as well as info on the tools required to build a gazebo. You will need many smaller hand tools for the job, but the biggest tools to make the job much easier will be power tools such as a miter saw and a drill.

Another tip is to be sure that you have all the necessary tools and materials on hand before you get started building your own traditional gazebo structure. it is not fun when you find you do not have the right screws, bolts or even a good sheet of sandpaper.

Landscape Design Software Free!!!

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

Due to popular demand on my blog I found these resources to plan your landscaping early before the spring of 2011. Enjoy!!
If your want to take your landscape design to the next level then you definitely need to consider getting your hands on landscape design software. While there are plenty options available on the market, they can be quite expensive and if you are only landscaping your own garden you might not be able to justify the cost. However there are some free landscape design software options available on the internet which may be more than enough if you are only a hobbyist.

You should remember however, that if a piece of software is free it is probably not going to be as advanced as paid options. That doesn’t mean that free landscaping design software won’t be enough for you, this depends on what you want to achieve using your software. The great thing about free software is that there is no cost for trying it out to see whether it has the features that you want.

Google SketchUp is software that you can use to create 3D models of anything you like. Not made specifically for landscaping designs, but you can be creative and have fun trying.

http://sketchup.google.com/

Not too complicated, and still fun to play around with. Great quality for a free product. An excellent, easy to use, and powerful enough to design a patio. A decent learning curve, so be prepared to spend some boring time at the manual. Either some features don’t exist, or I have simply not found them yet.

http://download.cnet.com/DesignWorkshop-Lite/3000-2072_4-6369.html?tag=mncol;lst

This is a totally free piece of software that you can either download or use on their site. It requires Adobe Shockwave to run it. While this is a basic program, it’s actually pretty good for visualizing and is very easy to use. This program is a drag and drop that lets you design from a top view and view in a perspective 3d mode. You’re not actually able to draw with this or any of the software named on this page. That’s o.k. for now since we’re trying to visualize and get ideas and not trying to complicate things by having to learn a program.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/design/

For free, this actually is a very easy piece of software to use. They try to get you to subscribe and pay for additional features, but you don’t have to and can get away with the basics. This one allows you to import a picture of your yard and drag and drop elements and plants into it. And the whole process was very easy to understand and do. Resizing pictures to proportion and changing angles was also very easy.

Holiday Outdoor Lighting

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Christmas is the one event where you can really go overboard with lights, decoration, and a festive appeal! You can cover the inside and outside of your house with sparkling illuminations that glitter in the winter months to give your home a bit of Christmas cheer! Colorful outdoor lighting looks brilliant and creates a festive thrill at Christmas time for everyone!

Christmas light exhibits captivate even the biggest yuletide cynics in the world and if you put on a good enough display, no one can fail to be awe struck by the look of your lighting display. Whether it’s just a love of attractive, dazzling, eye-catching things in the Christmas season, or an innate response to the bright sparkles reflecting off the snowy backdrop, we all love the festive joy and sense of occasion that we associate with outdoor Christmas lights!. Whatever the reason, dressing your home with sensational, seasonal lighting outside, makes everyone excited for Christmas.

When you pick your exterior Christmas party lights, it is a good idea to consider a couple of things first. To begin with, you need to be aware that outdoor Christmas lights need to be run off the current power supply in your house and that it is certainly not a good idea to overload this power source by engaging too many watts of lights into one circuit. Outside lights must be selected especially for external use as these types of lights are made to endure cold and extreme temperatures. .

Outdoor LED Christmas lights have recently become one of the most widely used festive lighting displays during the winter season. There are various different designs, shapes and styles such as LED stars, snowflakes, Santa’s, angels and Christmas trees, so you won’t have to worry that your lights will be the same as your neighbors. You can also get outdoor string LED lights if you’re more independent and want to create your own display! LED’s are incredibly noticeable and demand the attention of passers by as they ensure amazing light projection and a strong and durable display of color. The biggest benefit of Christmas LED lights is that they are environmentally friendly and last longer using up less energy. So, not only do they look good but they’re cheaper in the long run too!

Christmas illuminations for anyone with a lot of land are an excellent way to fill up dark and empty garden spaces. Model Santa Clauses, reindeer or elves can be used to make rooftops or lawns look more attractive and seasonal to the eye. At night, these figurines are really effective due to their interior light bulbs that make them glow as it grows darker.

Icicle lights are always a favorite at Christmas time. These elegant looking light sources sparkle and glisten under the cold night sky and look like real frozen icicles to the untrained eye. They add a really pretty and decorative alternative to your roof’s edge or guttering giving the house a twinkly, Christmas time feel.

Another ornate way to dress up your house in seasonal cheer is to use rope LED lighting. Such illuminations are particularly effective when used to edge porches and driveways and come in a variety of colors. When set up, the whole rope glows with light so these are good if you prefer continuous light to dotted illuminations. However, if spots of light are more preferable to you then you should consider tiny twinkle mini lights to decorate your garden – especially if it is full of luscious bushes, trees, and shrubbery.

Some people’s homes just don’t have practically placed power sockets for putting up outdoor Christmas lights but, if you think this is a problem you’ll encounter, don’t worry. Instead of implementing Christmas lights that plug into the wall, you can use battery operated illuminations instead. A bonus of using this type of lighting is that you aren’t restricted by the positioning of your power supply when thinking about where you want your display to go.

Whichever outdoor Christmas lights you ultimately decide on, it really is good to do your homework and compare prices between stores. I’d recommend buying your lights earlier on in the year when there are sales because this way you can save yourself a lot of unnecessary expenditure. Once you’ve bought your lights you can use them every year too, so getting a good set is a worthwhile investment.

We all love walking around the streets at Christmas time, looking at the different, traditional and innovative lighting displays on show. Join in the fun this year and put up your own exhibition so that you and your neighbors can all delight in the Christmas cheer. Decorating your own home with festive lights is the best way to show off your own Christmas spirit to others!

Outdoor Christmas Lighting

Friday, November 12th, 2010

What’s Christmas time without a bit of decorative lighting sprinkled everywhere? Ah, the houses have to be bright enough for Santa Claus to maneuver his sleigh in the nighttime sky to the right houses and shove himself into the chimney, all laden with gifts! But, keeping Santa aside, the lights bring on a festive charm like nothing else can. Outdoor Christmas lights proclaim to all passers-by that you are celebrating the joy of the season. Your lights must definitely match this feeling of joy.

Christmas lights come in several different forms, and you will really be confounded if you visit a store selling these lights. There are the basic round colored bulbs that have been used traditionally, but then there are many fancy shapes available nowadays. This year’s favorites seem to be the pearly bulbs, which are actually shaped round like pearls and given a glossy sheen on their outward surface to make them seem more so. Heart shaped bulbs are still present, and you will also find more thematic Christmas lights such as those shaped in the form of icicles, candies, and even holly and mistletoe!

Now you have to select how much length of bulb strings you will require. Do not be a Scrooge about buying these bulb strings, especially since you are going to light up the entire exterior of your house, which includes the bushes and the brambles. Bulb strings are nonperishable, so you can stock them in your loft or attic and use them the next year too. You may even experiment with the same bulbs to give a wholly different look to the decoration. Anyways, you will be requiring adequate length to at least cover the front side of your house twice over. Add a few feet of bulb string to cover up for those unavoidable folds and knots you might have to make. If you are dressing up the bushes with outdoor Christmas lights too, then take good-sized length, because bushes have an undesirable habit of camouflaging most of the decorative lights.

You can also get cute little lights for your crib. These are the LED Christmas lights, and they come in several different colors. A favorite is to line up the surface of the crib table with a string of LED Christmas lights. You can even add a router to the string to make these lights blink on and off. LED Christmas lights can also be put on the barks of your outdoor trees and can be lined around your flowerpots outside the house.

You will, of course, need an electrician to put up the electric points for you outside the house. You can do the setting up of the light strings yourself later on (that’s the creative part anyways), but let the electrician pull out a line from inside the house and provide you with the connection. This is necessary, or you might have to spend Christmastime with a hairstyle resembling that of a freshly plucked turkey.

The best part is putting up the lights. You can have a whole family thing here, with each one contributing in their way. Even the kiddies can help in handing out stuff when you are perched atop the stool to put up the lights. One of the most traditional ways is to run the light string along the edges of the house, but no one says you cannot experiment. You can use the LED Christmas lights to write out small messages like ‘Season’s Greetings’ on an outdoor wall of the house. If you have a fence, try getting the new fashion pipe Christmas lights to work on the top portion of the fence. Pipe lights work wonders with picket fences.

Do not forget to cover up the bushes too. When done, take the wire into the carefully hidden outdoor electrical socket. Now wait until Christmas eve to turn on the Christmas light magic in your home.
